Program for May - Faux Denim and Leather

Faux denim and leather picture frame

FAUX DENIM AND LEATHER

This is a techniques class, not a project class.  You can make anything you want from the faux denim and leather - jewellery, bottles of hope, covered object, etc.

Supplies for faux denim:

a piece of denim, preferably one that will go through the pasta machine.  It should not be too worn - you want the imprint of the weave to show.  I have some you can borrow if you don't have anything you want to cut up.  You can also just roll the clay on the cloth without putting it through the machine.

Blue clay - it can be Premo Denim straight out of the pack or a darker shade made by mixing.  I prefer a darker shade to start.

I've found various recipes for denim
Premo: Ultramarine with a small amount of black
Premo: 1 part Cobalt Blue and 1 part Ecru
Kato: 4 parts Ultra Blue, 1 Violet, 1 Black, 6 Pearl
Kato: 16 Ultra Blue, 1 Black

White or cream paint.  Genesis Heat Set white is great, but an acrylic paint works also.
White or cream-colored acrylic paint for the "stitches"

Faux leather with faux studs
Supplies for faux leather:

a piece of leather, real or faux, preferably one that will go through the pasta machine.  Or you can just roll the clay on the leather with a roller.  You want a definite pattern to show.

Clay in a "leather" color:  black, brown, reddish, whatever you want

Acrylic paint in a color you want for the "stitches"

Altoid tin covered in faux leather and embossed
For both:
a tiny screwdriver or something that makes a very short, straight indentation.  I will have some to borrow.

a tiny paint brush for getting paint into the stitches

paper towels or a make-up sponge to wipe off excess paint
a tiny bit of water

Your regular clay kit and whatever you need for the object you want to make.

March 25 Meeting - 3D Bargello

These were inspired by Jana Roberts Benzon. Jana is coming in 2013 to teach us her "Laser Cut and Styles" class. See more of her work at http://www.janarobertsbenzon.com/index.html.

Here's what you'll need to bring:
  • usual clay kit
  • a small amount of clay (1/4 package) in black, white, 2 or 3 of your favorite colours for a skinner blend
  • a larger amount of clay (1 package) in a colour that matches one of your blend colours or black
  • medium knitting needle
  • brayer
  • wax papers
  • burnisher (remember that little square "Customer Appreciation Day" ticket we got last year??)
  • white or black embossing powder if desired
  • makeup sponge if you have one
If you don't have something from this list, don't worry, your neighbour probably will!

See you then,
Janice

Bird nest hollow lentil bead

Thanks to everyone that came to the workshop on Sunday. I really enjoyed teaching it!
Here are a few of the results from the workshop. We could have easily used an extra hour. That's Sandra in the upper left corner. She is one of our newest members and I'm pretty sure she had a great time learning and playing on Sunday. That's Cynthia on the right (her bead is in the centre) The bottom beads were made by Sandy and her young friend Melissa. If anyone else gets their's finished please send me some pics and I'll put them on the blog!

Our new name tags perhaps?

If you attended our January meeting you know that  Janice spent some time organizing some sign up sheets to help us determine what workshops we will have  this year,  She has collected photos of techniques that look interesting,  If you think that you might want to tackle the technique you can volunteer to teach it.  Then we get to vote on what techniques we want to learn, (that's how I ended up doing the Bird/nest hollow lentil bead this Sunday)
At our next meeting we will still be voting since many of our members missed the Jan. meeting.
Here's where the above picture comes in...... we had a discussion at the meeting (again) about it being necessary for our guild to come up with name tags!! (my memory is horrible when it comes to names)
Soooooo, while cleaning out my father's computer desk i came across a whole pile of old floppy disks and being the creative person that i am i just couldn't throw them away before i salvaged the shiny ,metals parts. ( i bet you can relate huh???)
I thought that we could somehow attach the 2 parts.  Maybe the circle could hold the SOPCG logo and the larger piece could have our name and some other interesting bits.  (textures maybe?)
Anyway, I'm throwing it out there as something else to vote on.  Of course someone will need to volunteer to teach the workshop as well.  Is anyone up for the challenge??
